The following crops can be grown in forest soils :
Coconut, barley, spices, tea, cashew, maize, coffee, palm etc.
Explanation:
- There are different kinds of soils in India, like, the Alluvial soils, Laterite soils, Black soils, Red soils, Forest soils etc.
- The fertility of a soil depends on the mineral contents (nutrients such as nitrogen, potash, etc,), organic matter (humus) present in the soil and also on the ability of the soil to hold moisture.
- The Forest soils are poor in nutrients but rich in humus.
- These soils are slightly acidic, They require fertilizers to support the crops.
- Depending on the climate of the area and the availability of irrigational facilities or water, different crops, as stated above, can be grown on Forest soils with proper manuring.
- For long term returns, one can grow plantation crops like coconut, cashew etc and for short term returns one can grow vegetative crops.
