Name the different breeds of sheep found in India and the wool derived from them?

There are in total 22 breeds of sheep in India and out of them only a few are capable of providing good apparel wool.

1) Nilgiri: this breed of sheep is found in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu and provides with wool that can be used for apparel production.

2) Tiruchy black: this breed of sheep is found in Tiruchy, Perambalur, Dharampur and Salem district of Tamil Nadu. This breed provides a very coarse variety of wool.

3) Coimbatore: this breed of Indian sheep is found in the Coimbatore region of Tamil Nadu and the wool reared from this sheep is used in making course carpet.

4) Marwari: this breed is Indian sheep is mainly found in the western regions like Jodhpur, Jalore, Nagaur, Pali and Barmer. This sheep provides us with a very superior quality of carpet wool.

1. Northern Region of India mainly has Gaddi sheep which produced white wool.

2. North western Region of India mainly has Marga sheep which produced carpet white wool.

3. Eastern Region of India mainly has Balangir sheep which produced white or black fleece.

4. Southern Peninsular Region of India mainly has Deccani sheep which produced white or black fleece.
