Many of the towns grew around military garrisons as providers of food, goods and services to them. In due course, many of them emerged as cultural centers.

• The commercial town includes the places like patna and Daulatabad etc.
• The pilgrim or temple town includes the banaras, kanchipuram etc.

• The cities were called as burghs and the people who resided in them were called as burghers. The medieval cities were protected by high walls.
