There are three types of weathering physical, chemical and biological.
Physical weathering occurs by the effect of changing temperature of rocks, causing them to break them apart which is sometimes assisted by water.
Chemical weathering occurs when rain water reacts with the mineral grains in rocks which forms new clays and soluble salts. These reactions occur particularly when water is slightly acidic.
Living organisms contribute in biological weathering.
Two main types of physical weathering are freeze-thaw and exfoliation
Freeze thaw is caused by water which seeps into cracks, freezes and expands which break it apart. The weathering in which curved plates of rock are stripped from rock below is called exfoliation.
