suppose we have a quadratic equation
a {x}^{2}  + bx + c = 0
then the discriminant (d) is given by
d =  \sqrt{ {b}^{2}  - 4ac}
descriminant plays role in defining nature of roots
if d>0....real roots
if d=0....equal roots
if d<0....imaginary roots
