The people of these civilizations were called Sumerians and the language spoken by them was called as Akkadian language. The epic poem Gilgamesh was also written in Akkadian language.

It is an epic about a Sumerian hero who is brave, courageous and king of city of Uruk named Gilgamesh. The epic deals with his friendship with Enkidu his quest for immortality and finally his acceptance of death. Archeological studies have found that there was an actual king named Gilgamesh who ruled Mesopotamia.
