If the earth’s surface was uniform (e.g., completely ocean or uniformly flat land), latitude would greatly affect climate while longitude won’t. However, the earth’s surface exhibits diverse geographic features. Examples of diverse geographic features just in the North and South America include: the opposite juxtaposition of land and ocean between the east coast and west coast of the continent; the presence of mountains (the Rockies running north to south in the western North America, the much lower Appalachians on the east side, and the Andes in South America) and the two large land masses (North and South America) being connected by the narrow Central America. These types of diverse geographic features at different longitudes and latitudes greatly affect atmospheric circulation, rainfall pattern, vegetation, the frequencies and strengths of hurricanes and tornadoes, and thus regional climate. So even though common sense tells us latitude plays a major role in affecting climate, it is often dwarfed by the presence of other geographic features.

The number of geographic features that can affect a place’s climate is almost too innumerable to describe. If the place is near a mountain, the height and shape of the mountain and whether the place is on the windward side or leeward side of a mountain would affect its climate. If the place is near a lake, whether the place is on the windward side or the leeward side would also affect its climate. Even with nearly the same latitude, the place’s geographic relation to the ocean can greatly affects its climate. For example, Los Angeles on the west coast of US and Charleston on the east coast are of nearly the same latitude, but they have starkly different climate.
