The main factor responsible for the production of heat due to electric current is RESISTANCE of the wire. The wire opposes the motion of the electrons and in this way the electrons collide with the atoms of the wire transferring some of their kinetic energy to the atoms of the wire. This kinetic energy appears as heat and as a result the wire is heated.
