Drainage systems of lndia are mainly controlled by the broad relief features of the subcontinent e.g. land and precipitation. Accordingly drainage systems are divided into Himalayan rivers and Peninsular rivers.
Himalayan rivers : are perennial, they receive water from the rain as well as melted snow from the lofty Himalayas. They have cut deep gorges and have a long course and carry loads of sand and form ox-bow lakes, flood plains and deltas.
Penisular rivers : are seasonal and their flow is dependent upon the rainfall. They have shorter and shallower courses. Most of them originate in the Western Ghats and drain in the Bay of Bengal. Some originate in the Central highlands and flow towards the east.
