Nutrition is the nourishment of the body with nutrients primarily to serve the purpose of providing energy and materials required for the growth of the organism. All organisms in nature i.e plants, animals and microbes need nutrition. They require nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. In nature green plants are the only organisms which can prepare their own nutrients required by them while all other organisms have to depend on plants directly or indirectly for the acquisition of these nutrients. Some nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins and fats are required in bulk amount by the organisms while vitamins and minerals are required in trace amounts even then we can not underestimate their value as they play a key role in the metabolism of the organism.

Functions of nutrition in organisms

1. Nutrition enables the organisms to get the necessary energy to meet out all its life activities.
2. Nutrition helps the cells of the organism to synthesize new protoplasm which in turn help the cells to grow and divide. This activity ultimately helps the organism to grow.
3. Nutrition provides the raw materials required for the synthesis of enzymes, hormones, proteins, nucleic acids, compounds needed for the construction of the cells of the organism.
4. Nutrition provides materials to repair the damaged cells, tissues and to replace worn out cells of the organism.
5. Nutrients like vitamins and minerals will protect our body against diseases and infections. Vitamins act as bio-catalysts or co-factors in metabolic reactions of the body cells of the organisms.
