Megasthenes, (born c. 350 bc—died c. 290), ancient Greek historian and diplomat, author of an account of India, the Indica, in four books. An Ionian, he was sent by the Hellenistic king Seleucus I on embassies to the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta.

Megasthenes was a Greek traveller and geographer who was sent by King Selucos Nicator during the 4th century BC in Chandragupta Maurya's court where he stayed as a Greek historian and ambassador for five years. The book he wrote is called Indika (also spelt as Indica.)
