Manali Kallat Vainu Bappu was born on 10th August, 1927. He is deemed as the father of modern Indian astronomy. He died on the 19th August, 1982.
Vainu Bappu was an Indian astronomer and the first Indian president of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). He is played an important role in the inception of several astronomical institutions in India which includes Vainu Bappu Observatory.
He also greatly contributed in the foundation of the modern Indian Institute of Astrophysics. He also made a discovery in 1957 about the Wilson-Bappu effect in collaboration with American astronomer Olin Chaddock Wilson.
