India’s first woman doctor was Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi (1865 – 1887).
Married at a very early age, as was the custom in India then, she gave birth to a child when she was fourteen years of age. This child died within ten days. It was a turning point in her life and prompted her to become a doctor. She was supported by her husband, in this endeavour.
Though she was tormented by bad health, she went to study in the United States and graduated with an MD in 1886.
