Understanding the rules for naming an organic compound:
- Identify the longest carbon chain in the compound.
- Branched carbons must get the lowest possible numbers.
- If different alkyl groups are present, they are listed in alphabetical order.
- If two or more substituent groups are present, then the numbers are separated by commas.
- If two substituent groups are in an equivalent position, the one which comes first in the alphabetical listing is given a lower number.
- Numbering to be done from the closer end of a substituent group, functional group, or double or triple bond.
Solutions:
First compound
- The longest chain has 7 carbon atoms
- We start numbering from the right-hand side (because of the double bond and substituent groups)
Ans: 3, 4 - dimethylhept-2-ene
Second compound
- The longest chain has 6 carbon atoms
- We can start numbering from any side (because the double bond is present in the middle)
Ans: hex-3-ene
