Two co-enzymes involved in cellular respiration are FAD and NAD.

Co-enzymes

Co-enzymes are majorly derivatives of vitamins. These bind to the specific active site of the enzyme and facilitate the complementary binding of the enzyme to the substrate.

Cellular respiration

  • Respiration is a catabolic process that breaks down the food molecule to release energy. This energy released is utilized for all the life processes.
  • The two co-enzymes seen in the Krebs cycle are FAD and NAD. They both are reduced by gaining electrons, which are given off by the organic molecules. These organic molecules are broken down by enzymes.
  • Later these reduced FAD in form of FADH+H^{+} and NAD in form of NADH+H^{+} enters the ETS situated in the mitochondrial membrane and yields ATP the ultimate energy currency.

Hence, FAD-FLAVIN ADENINE DINUCLEOTIDE and NAD-NICOTINAMINDE ADENINE DINUCLEOTIDE are examples of co-enzymes seen in cellular respiration.
