The fortress prison that was stormed during the French revolution was called Bastille.
The reasons for its storming:
-Bastille had become a symbol of the Kings Monarchy and the enemies of the state were being locked in there without trial. Hence the taking over of the Bastille by the revolutionaries was a symbol of victory over the leadership
-The people who were revolting were in need of weapons because they didn't have proper weaponry. The fortress provided a good place for them to find some, because weapons were stored in it.
