Pteridophyta or as they are termed as pteridophytes are also called as flowering plants. These certainly are also considered to be one of the most diverse groups within the plant kingdom. They can include ferns, spore plants and moses as well and are also believed to have presence of true leaves.
The difference is that the leaves that these plants have are in fact more like feather and fern tree is a good example of this category.
These are basically divided into two main types:- peltosprangiate and eusporangiate (which are also considered as living fossils).
The first of this types were present since Devonian period and share common characteristics along with other plant groups. In the middle Devonian period they were characterized as phacophylales and cladoxylates. These belonged to the floral plant groups.
Later in the late Devonian period these appeared as stauropteridales and zygopteridales which are also termed as true fern types. later at the time of Paleozoic period all four types were considered as extinct types.
Then these were replaced by what is termed as the more advanced fern plants. Carboniferous period was the time when better fern types developed. These showed characteristics of growing to heights equivalent to 8 meters.
Present time ferns are believed to be developed only after extinction of Permian- tinassic types. These are also the type of ferns that existed at the time of Jurassic park age. Then came the cretaceous period when Marratia and Osmunda were very much common.
Lower cretaceous are also believed to develop what is called as the false trunk. They had better developed true leaves and reproductive structures.
