Pteridophytes are vascular plants which are also known as cryptogams (i.e reproduction is hidden).

It reproduces through dispersal of spores as they neither produce flowers nor seeds.

They include ferns, horsetails etc.

They include four classes:-

1) Psilopsida- are the most primitive vascular plants in which roots are absent and rhizoids occur instead of roots. Leaves may be present or absent.

2) Lycopsida- are vascular plants which show differentiation of roots, stems and leaves. Leaves are microphyllous i.e, they do not produce a leaf gap in the vascular strand of the stem.

3) Sphenopsida- are also known as horsetails. In them, the stems are joined and ribbed with leaves and branches are borne in whorls.

4) Pteropsida- are also called ferns. They are usually perennial in nature and are differentiated into roots, stem and spirally arranged leaves or possess raised leaves.
