Glial cells support neurons and maintain their environment. Glial cells of the central nervous system are of four types including oligodendrocytes, astrocytes, ependymal cells, and microglial cells. Oligodendrocytes forms the myelin sheath around axons within the central nervous system. However, within the peripheral nervous system, the myelin sheath is created by Schwann cells in nerves and satellite glial cells in ganglia.
