The copper metal react with oxygen resulting in the formation of an outer layer of copper oxide which appears green

It can be removed by scrubbing rhe copper surface with the lemon covered in the salt

We do this because lemon is acidic in nature and when we rubb lemon on the tarnished copper it react to form salt which is then washed away while cleaning the vessel.
