Name the herbicide used as post-emergence. (Topic: WEED MANAGEMENT IN FIELD CROPS)
Answers
What is postemergence ?
It is used or occurring in the stage between theemergence of a seedling and the maturity of a crop plant. Postemergence herbicides is discussed below.
1)Weeds are unwanted plants growing and damaging the target crops.
2)They share the nutrients, water, space, light and other essential requirements that are meant for the desired crop.
3)Weed plants serve as alternate host and career for several pests and diseases.
4)The dominant weeds of this crop in the plains are given below.
Commonly used Herbicides:
Basalin or Flutolanil: 1)N-(2-Chloroethyl) - 2, 6-dinitro-N-Propyl- 4-(Trifluoromethyl) aniline.
2)It is applied before planting and mixed with the soil.
3)It is available as mollifiable concentrate or as granules, belongs to dinitro-anilines group and is volatile.
4)It is more or less susceptible to photo-degradation and therefore needs to be quickly incorporated into the soil before planting the crop.
5)It is absorbed by the root and translocated throughout the plant system.
Pendimethalin or Stomp:
1)N-(1-Ethyl Propyl)-2, 6 dinitro-3, 4- xylidine.
2)This compound also belongs to dinitro-anilines and available as an emulsifiable concentrate and as granules.
3)Under normal environmental conditions, it persists for less than a year at phyto-toxic levels in soil.
Linuron or AfalonL:
1)N' - (3,4 - dichlorophenol) - N- methoxy - N - Methylurea.
2)Linuron is basically replace urea and is selective pre-emergence herbicide for all type of soil under medium rainfall .
3)Linuron appears to be the best persistent of this group with no detectable side effect. Hence is useful in situations where same weed germinates at later stages of crop growth viz.
Poa spp.Atrazine:
1)2-Chloro - 4 ethylamino - 6 isopropylamino - 1,3,5 - triazine.
2)It is applied in Potato cropping to control annual grasses and broad leaf weeds.
Explanation:
Pendimethalin, a pre-emergent herbicide, is widely used to control annual grasses and some broad-leaf weeds in a wide range of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, many tree and vine crops, and many turfgrass species..
