Other than these ; the most important city was \sf\orange{ VERSAILLES}.It had the royal residence for Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette. It was very beautiful and costly to maintain.

Additional information :

  • The French Revolution is one of the major historical events not only for France but the whole world. It was the beginning of the ideas of Equality , Fraternity and Liberty.

  • It began with the seize of Bastille on 14 July , 1789.

  • Till the time Louis XVI became the king of France ; the French treasury became empty. The reasons for it were :
  1. Prolonged wars
  2. Helped 13 American colonies to gain independence from British leading to a debt of 2 Billion Livre.
  3. The maintenance of the court of Versailles was very costly

  • Taxes were not enough for maintaining army , courts , government officers and government university which caused him to increase the taxes.

  • The French society was divided into three estates namely first estate (Clergy) second estate (Nobility) third estate (Middle class)

  • Only the third estate used to pay taxes as first and second estate had birth based privileges which cause them not to give taxes or feudal tax and dues taken from peasants instead.

  • Already there were many taxes. When Louis XVI asked for an Estate General meeting to increase taxes ; both the upper estates agreed but 3rd estate asked for 1 person , 1 vote , 1 value to which none agreed.

  • This enraged the 3rd esate and they went out of the Estate General.

  • They gathered at the indoor tennis court at Versailles lease ground and declared themselves as National Assembly. Here Tennis court oath was taken and this way the French revolution began.
