Mammary glands only produce milk after childbirth. During pregnancy, the hormonesprogesterone and prolactin are released. The progesterone interferes with prolactin, preventing the mammary glandsfrom lactating. During this time, small amounts of a pre-milk substance called colostrum are produced.
