Answer:

Ovaries as an endocrine gland

Females have a pair of ovaries in the abdomen in the pelvic cavity near the oviducts and the uterus.

Ovaries are also primary sex organ which produces one ovum per menstrual cycle i.e. in 28 days.

The two Steroid hormones secreted by Ovaries are Estrogen and Progesterone.

Ovaries are composed of ovarian follicles and stromal tissues.

The ovarian follicles synthesize and secrete Estrogen.

Estradiol is the main Estrogen which helps in the development of female secondary characters and stimulates the maturation of ova. It also develops uterine epithelium and mammary glands.

After ovulation, teh follicle converts into a structure called corpus luteum. The corpus luteum secretes Progesterone.

The progesterone further helps in the development of uterine epithelium and mammary glands. It helps in the formation of placenta and maintains pregnancy. It also helps in milk secretion.

Relaxin, Inhibin and Actin are also the hormones secreted by corpus luteum.

Relaxin helps in softening ligaments like the foot ligaments and the ligaments near the pubic area.

Inhibin and Actin inhibits and activates production of FSH and GnRH.
