Almost all the states apart from the Hindi belt states were formed on the basis of different language and culture

Tamil Nadu = Tamil

Karnataka = primarily Kannada culture, but interspersed with Tulu, Coorgi, Konkani culture

Andhra Pradesh ( and now Telangana too ) = Telugu

Maharashtra = Marathi and culture

Orissa = Oriya language & culture

Gujarat = Gujarati language & culture

Punjab = Punjabi language & culture

West Bengal = Bengali Language and Culture

Kerala = Malaylam language and Malayali culture

Assam = Assami language and culture

Manipur = Manipuri language and culture

Tripura = Bengali language and Tripurese culture

Jammu & Kashmir = Kashmiri, Ladhaki, Dogri and other cultures
