To validate the cheque book, banks use Magnetic Ink Character Reader (MICR).
This reader can read the special characters printed in the magnetic field of the cheque, and bank official can easily find the details including bank name, branch and other sources of the particular cheque by placing the cheque under this reader.
Basically, banks can imprint the special characters contains their branch location, bank name and other details on the magnetic field of their own cheque book.
