A weighing scale or balance is the instrument used to measure the weight of the body.

Other names:

The weighing scale is also known by other names such as weight scale, mass scale, mass balance, and weight balance.

Weighing scale:

  • Traditional weighing scales consists of two plates which measures weight by the static equilibrium phenomenon, by placing the known masses on one plate and the unknown masses on the other plate.
  • Spring scale uses a spring of a known stiffness and elasticity to determine the mass measured.
  • There are various other types of balances which are torsion balance, Roberval balance, pendulum balance, analytical balance and electronic balance.
  • The calibration of the scales are usually in kilograms but sometimes calibrated in Newton.
