The instrument which is used to separate the oil and water is separating funnel.

  • As we know both oil and water are immiscible liquids that is they both don't dissolve with each other or they are unlike solvents.
  • Since water is a dense liquid it will be present at the bottom while oil will be on top layer of the separating funnel.
  • With the help of a valve firstly the water layer is allowed to move down first . As soon as the water seeps down and oil layer approaches the bottom of funnel the valve is stopped.
  • Hence, this is how oil and water can be separated.
