1.)Hardness in water is caused by dissolved magnesium and calcium ions.

2.) These make it more difficult for the water to form a lather with soap.

3.) Temporary hardness is caused by dissolved calcium hydrogen carbonate (which is removed by boiling).

4.) Temporary hardness is due to hydrogen-carbonates of calcium and magnesium.
