Answer:

4-butyl-2,6,7-trimethylnonane

Explanation :

To write the IUPAC name of a compound we have to keep in mind :-

name of substituent with their position + word root for longest chain + primary suffix

Step 1:-

• Count the number of carbons to detect the longest chain.

• Also keep in mind, that the chosen chain has the greatest number of substituents and functional groups.

So as we count the number of atoms in ---- we find that the longest chain has 9 carbon atoms and 4 substitutes.

=>Word root for longest chain is non (as it has 9 carbon atoms in the longest chain)

Step 2 :-

See if the compound has any double or triple bond

1. if it has double bound then primary suffix is ene

2. triple bond then primary suffix is yne

3. if no triple or double bond then primary suffix is ane

=> Since, the compound has no double or triple bond (case 3.) it will be named Nonane.

Step 3 :-

find the substituents

here the substituents are CH3 , and CH3(CH2)3

( a substituent is an atom or group of atoms which replaces one or more hydrogen atoms on the parent chain of a hydrocarbon)

−CH3 methyl group or methanyl

CH3(CH2)3- butyl group or butanyl

=> position of methanyl is at 3 different places 2, 6, and 7

=> position of butanyl is at 1 place 4

=> Since, there are 3 same substitutes at 3 different places we'll add a prefix "tri" in front of the substitute name methyl

And we know that ,

name of substituent with their position + word root for longest chain + primary suffix

So, we write :-

4-butyl-2,6,7-trimethylnonane

[=> a hyphen ' - ' is placed in between a letter and a number

=> 2 numbers are separated by a comma]
