Lord Dalhousie, the governor General implemented a policy of Doctrine of Lapse. According to this policy if an Indian ruler died without a male heir his kingdom would lapse that is become part of the company territory. Such as Satara, Sambalpur, Udaipur, Nagpur and Jhansi were annexed under this policy
