when an insoluble substance is immersed in a liquid the layer that settles at the bottom is known as the sediment whereas the layer which floats on the water is known as a floatant

Explanation:

  • usually the density of the sediments are more than the density of water. As a result the acceleration due to gravity is more than the the force of buoyancy.
  • As a result of this the material settles to the bottom of the substance when the liquid is left undisturbed.
  • However if the  insoluble substance has its density lesser than that of water then the force of buoyancy is more than the acceleration due to gravity and as a result of this the material floats in water.
