The town planning of the Indus valley civilization was divided into two areas : the upper citadel area and the lower residential area.

The upper citadel area consists of the granaries and assemblies.

The lower residential area consists of the houses and streets and through out the town, there was a well equipped drainage system with manholes at regular intervals.
