Water is the most essential resource for human life. Industrialization has destroyed what most of the fresh water sources and the ones that remain are on the verge of being consumed. There are several ways to supplement the depletion that industrialization has imposed on us. A necessary step would involve asking companies to concentrate on purifying the water they let out. Severe fines should be imposed on detractors and this should be imposed with the vehemence that rivals the Make in India Campaign (what are our grandchildren going to do with a savings accounts if they don't have water to drink)

The first would be to drink sewage water. Yes you read it right. It is a policy already followed in Singapore. The waste water treatment plant in Singapore by Public Utilities Board branded as NEWater is among the best in the world. Its pH is exactly 7 and the Director of the organization himself drinks from the NEWater tank in a documentary. It is a relevent need. The NEWater plant uses latest cutting edge technology which has around four stages. It was begun as on an experimental basis in 1974 and now produces around 100 million litres every day. Below is a diagram of a low-tech treatment for grey water which is the run off from Bathing, Cooking, cleaning etc. This can be instrumental in rural areas were grey water is around 80% of the total consumption. Spread of technology is essential for the empowerment of the poor.

The second would be to build Desalination plants all around the coast of the country and link them to other parts with extensive pipelines. I do not believe human population will reach a stage were we can drink up the whole of the oceans very soon. But this will be extremely expensive in both monetary as well as on an energy scale and needs to be subsidized heavily. But due to the urgency of the water shortage, this can be considered as an exigent situation and the costs incurred can be taken up as loans from World Bank or Asian Development Bank(This will run into trillions of dollars

Reduce dependence on Ground water and rainwater harvesting. Yes again you did read it right. The water cycle is the most important part of the weather patterns in India and the monsoons have been failing repeatedly. More research needs to go into climate control and catchment areas need to be devoted to letting water soak into the ground or flow into the sea. Eventually we should be able to control our weather patterns so much as to ensure year round rainfall all over the nation. Instead of focusing on micro-objectives like a water grid or plants all over the nation, a stable water table and improved flow of rivers can help us control our weather. Another obvious step will be to plant more trees.

Buy a little bit of the poles and start melting- 70% of the world's fresh water is frozen in the poles. We can combat rising sea levels by building pipes from the poles delivering water to the homes in India
