The male gametes are known as 'sperm' and the female gametes are known as 'ovum'.

Definition of Gametes:

  • Gametes or sex cells are an organism's reproductive cells.
  • Each gametes carry with themselves a single chromosome.

Male gametes and their functions:

  • The male gamete is known as sperm.
  • The sperm is developed in the testicles within a system of tiny tubes known as seminiferous tubules.
  • The sperm are released into the female reproductive system which results in the fertilisation of the egg for reproduction.

Female gametes and their functions:

  • The female gamete is known as 'ovum'.
  • The ovum is also known as eggs and is located in the uterus of the females.
  • Once sperm enters the female reproductive body, the egg fertilises. This fertilised egg is known as a zygote.

In the process of human reproduction, the two kinds of gametes are involved. Once both sperm and the ovum meet and a zygote is formed, it results in a process of becoming an embryo and thereafter a fetus.
