The ovaries of a young girl starts functioning around the age of 10 to 14 years .
It starts releasing the ova (ovulation) and this stage is known as puberty.
During the first ovulation , the ovary also releases female sex hormones into the blood.
These hormones are known as Oestrogens, they are responsible for bringing bodily changes in a girl such as growth of mammary glands, widening of hips, growth of hair in pubic regions and armpits and there is also an increase in the size of utherus and vagina.
These developments are also referred as secondary sexual characteristics.
Another hormone secreted by the corpus luteum is progesterone which helps in preparing the utherus for receiving the embryo.
