simple electromagnet consisting of a coil of insulated wire wrapped around an iron core. A core offerromagnetic material like iron serves to increase the magnetic field created. The strength of magnetic field generated is proportional to the amount of current through the winding.

I assume you mean what material can you use as a core for an electromagnet since the coils can be anything that conducts electricity and is commonly made of copper.
The core can be anything with a high magneticPermeability (electromagnetism). If you look at the chart on the wikipedia page, Air is a better core than copper. Aluminum is slightly better than air. Irons/Steels are way better than the above.
