Answer:

Extraction of Metals of high reactivity. Metals of high reactivity; such as sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, etc. are extracted from their ores by electrolytic reduction. These metals cannot be reduced using carbon because carbon is less reactive than them.

Answer:

Explanation:

Metals high in the reactivity series are very reactive for eg: sodium, aluminium. Reducing agents like carbon cannot reduce because they have a very high affinity for O2 more than carbon. so they are reduced by electrolytic reduction ie: electrolysis of their molten chlorides.  for eg-

An electrolytic pan is taken in which  molten salt NaCl solution is taken as an electroyte. Electrodes are put in and connected to the source of current. when current is passed through the electrolyte is decomposes to form Na( postive ion) and chlorine(negative ion). Sodium is decomposed at the cathode and chlorine is liberated at anode.

Na + e⁻ = Na⁺

2Cl⁻ = Cl₂ + 2e⁻
