Answer:

The diwani rights were handed over to the British by the mughal ruler Shah Alam ll . In those days , according to the administration of the mughals a diwani was the right to collect revenue or tax from a state , province or city . So by giving diwani rights to the British we mean that mughal emperor Shah Alam ll gave the right of collecting revenue or tax from some states which were - Bengal , Orissa and Bihar . Hence the British acquired taxes from the 3 eastern states - Bihar , Bengal and Orissa and in return they had to pay a sum of 26 lakh rupees which in that time was equal to 260,000 pounds sterling ) every year to the Mughal emperor Shah Alam ll .
