There are two types of nucleic acids (genetic materials): DNA and RNA. DNA is deoxyribonucleic acid and RNA is ribonucleic acid. DNA consists of adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine. RNA consists of adenine, guanine, cytosine and uracil. DNA is double stranded and RNA is single stranded. But sometimes DNA can be single stranded and RNA can be double stranded. RNA helps in protein synthesis and DNA helps in replication of genetic material.
