Kala Azar:
- It is also known as Visceral leishmaniasis (VL).
- It is caused by the Leishmania which is a parasite found and transmitted through the bite of female phlebotomine sand-flies which feeds on blood to produce eggs.
- It is a fatal disease which is untreated in about 95% of the cases that have been reported.
- The symptoms of this disease are non-uniform cycle of fever, anaemia, dramatic loss of weight, and inflammation in spleen as well as in liver.
Sleeping Sickness:
- Sleeping sickness is also known as African Trypanosomiasis.
- It is caused by the species Trypanosoma brucei which are microscopic parasites.
- The vector of this disease is the tsetse fly (Glossina species) that is specifically found in sub-Saharan Africa only.
- Symptoms of sleeping sickness are pain in the joints or muscles, insomnia or sleepiness, muscle loss and weakness or weight loss. Some other common symptoms are: fever, personality change, itching, headache, mental confusion, skin rash, or swollen lymph nodes.
