(a) When a metal reacts with oxygen, a metal oxide forms. The general equation for this reaction is: metal + oxygen → metal oxide. Rust is a form of iron oxide and it forms slowly when iron is exposed to air.

(b) Non-metals react with oxygen to form non-metal oxides. Non-metal oxides are acidic in nature. They turn blue litmus to red. Sulphurous acid turns blue litmus to red showing it is an acid and that sulphur dioxide is acidic in nature.
