The flower consists of four whorls; namely the calyx, which consists of sepals, the corolla, which is made up of petals, the androecium and the gynaecium which are the male and female reproductive parts of the flower, respectively. The sepals are responsible for the protection of a young developing flower, while the petals attract pollinators and provide a landing platform for insects such as bees. Thus the sepals and petals are not directly involved in reproduction but do assist indirectly in the process.
