The ‘Justice Party’ which was a party of non-brahmins in the Madras Presidency of British India did not boycott the council elections during the noncooperation movement.
Explanation:
- After the establishment of a dyarchic government system by the Government of India Act in 1919, the first election of the legislative council to the Madras presidency took place in November 1920.
- Because of its role in the "non-cooperation movement", "Indian National Congress" had boycotted the election. In the early stages of the non-Brahmin movement
- The elections were held in the early phases of the non-Brahmin movement, while anti-Brahminism was the key issue. The members of the Justice Party were Non-Brahman and so far could not win elections because the Brahman candidates had always won. The non-Brahmins thought that they had a good chance to join the Councils through this election
- The Justice party however sought to cooperate with the British Indian govt for the reason that the situation of non-Brahmins would improve in British India.
- With no strong opposition, the "justice party" had won the elections. The first "Chief Minister" of the Presidency was Subbarayalu Reddiar.
