The narrator spent his childhood with his grandmother in a village. Khushwant Singh was readied for and accompanied by his grandmother to school which was adjacent to a temple. At the village school he was taught scriptures and prayer, his grandmother also helped him in his studies. While coming back from the school he used to feed the chapattis to the street dogs that the grandmother carried for them. Khushwant Singh had developed a deep bond with his grandmother, but their relationship changed gradually as they moved to the city to live with Khushwant Singh's parents.
