Answer:

In micelle structure one end of soap (hydrocarbon chain) faces towards the oil (dirt) and the other end (ionic part) faces towards the water. This results in the emulsion in water which ultimately helps in removing dust from the surface.

The phenomenon behind cleansing action of soap:

  • Soap molecules have different properties when emulsion in water, it has a hydrophobic end and a hydrophilic end which is nothing but a chain of carbon atoms where one end repels and the other attracts water molecules.
  • Since most dirt particles are not soluble in water, the hydrophobic end of soap molecules attach themselves with the dirt forming a cluster called micelles and remain as colloidal solutions.
  • They remain emulsion in water by trapping the dirt or dust within the cluster.
  • When rinsed, the micelle clusters along with dirt get easily washed away.
