On a large scale, photosynthesis takes place in the mesophyll tissue of a leaf. But more specifically, photosynthesis takes place in the thylakoid membrane tissue inside of the chloroplasts. The thylakoid membrane is the specialized tissue that contains the plant's photosynthetic pigments.
