Bardoli is a place in the Surat Metropolitan Region of Gujarat. In 1928, during British rule, a civil disobedience movement was started here, famously referred to as the Bardoli Satyagraha. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, later called the iron man of India, eventually led the movement and this catapulted him into the front ranks of the independence movement.
The reason for the movement was that in 1925, the people of Gujarat suffered from floods and famine. The farmers crops were destroyed and they suffered immensely from financial losses. However, the Government at the Bombay Presidency raised the taxes by a whopping 25% that year. Despite submission of civic petitions, the Government did not relent. Consequently, a civil disobedience movement was started by the farmers of Bardoli Taluka under the leadership of Sardar Patel.
