Meiosis occurs in the tissues that produce gametes. A diploid cell will undergo meiosis to produce 4 gametes which are are haploid (only contain 1 of each type of chromosome, instead of 2). Female gametes fuse with male gametes, during sexual reproduction, to form a zygote. The zygote performs mitosis to form a new individual.
In flowering plants, the gametes are produced in the flowers. In cone producing plants like pine trees, the gametes are produced in the cones. In moss, the gametes are produced at the top of these tiny plants.
