The only primary alcohol which gives the iodoform test is ethanol. This happens due to the following reasons:
- The reaction of iodine with methyl ketone to give a yellowish precipitate with an antiseptic smell is the iodoform test.
- The 'R' can either be a hydrocarbon or a methyl group, if it is a methyl group then it leads to the formation of a secondary alcohol.
- Secondary alcohols which show a positive iodoform test have the methyl group attached to the caron with the OH group.
